Transfer Credit and Credit-by Examination

Students may obtain academic credit for coursework taken at other institutions or through credit by examination. Additionally, students may use work experience or coursework taken at a non-traditional institution to obtain credit or place into a course on campus. See below for an overview of each option:

Transfer Credit from Another Institution

UNT is a transfer-friendly institution offering 144 undergraduate degree plans that may use the coursework taken at other institutions. However, not all coursework that transfers to UNT is applicable to every degree. Use the guidelines below to help you navigate the process to transfer your credit.

Transferring Credit from a Texas Community College

If you plan to transfer to UNT from a Texas community college or completed dual credit courses in a Texas high school, use our Transfer Guides to determine equivalent courses. If you are a current UNT student and want to take courses at your local community college, work with your academic advisor to determine what you can take to progress towards your degree.

  • Choose College of Science in the College drop-down, or type your degree name in the search field.
  • You can also use the Registrar's Transfer page as a good starting point.
  • Refer to the Texas Common Core Numbering System for a quick guide on what course at UNT is equal to a course at most Texas Community Colleges.
  • Taking courses at a community college in your final semester at UNT will delay your graduation date to the next semester.

Transferring Credit from a Four-Year or Out-of-State Institution

If you plan to transfer to UNT from another four-year or out-of-state institution, visit our Future Students page to schedule an appointment for an unofficial evaluation. If you are a current UNT student and want to take courses at a four-year or out-of-state institution, work with your academic advisor and/or faculty advisor to determine what you can take to progress towards your degree.

  • Academic advisors determine if a course will count toward your Core Curriculum or as a general elective.
  • Faculty advisors determine if a course will count toward your major degree requriements or transfers as a specific class.
  • You may need to provide a syllabus of the course if advisors are unable to evaluate the credit based on readily available information.
  • Taking courses at a community college in your final semester at UNT will delay your graduation date to the next semester.
Credit-by-Examination and Placement

UNT awards undergraduate college credit on the basis of select local and national examinations. This is subject to University and department restrictions. Contact your academic advisor for details.

Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate

If you took AP or IB credit courses in high school and completed the associated exam, send your scores to UNT to obtain course credit. Minimum score requirements apply. See the current University catalog for required scores and additional information.

College-Level Examination Program

Current students may take CLEP exams to obtain course credit for select courses. Minimum score requirements apply. See the current University catalog for required scores and additional information.

Math Placement Assessment

Current TSI-complete students may take the ALEKS Placement, Preparation, and Learning (PPL) assessment to determine readiness for math courses. Earning certain scores may permit students to place into higher level coursework. Visit the Math department website for details.

Non-Traditional and Prior Learning Credit
UNT may award credit for the demonstration of specific competencies, even when they are not earned in a traditional academic setting. Students seeking academic credit on the basis of military or work experience, training, or coursework taken at non-traditional or non-accredited institution may request to have their coursework or experience evaluated by the department that would issue the credit. Restrictions on credit awarded apply. Contact your academic advisor for details on how to submit your request.
