UNT Biology Graduate Student Association to Host 19th Annual Research Symposium

The UNT Biology Graduate Student Association (BGSA) invites fellow students to participate in the upcoming 19th Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium, taking place April 13-15. Students will have the opportunity to present a poster, participate in workshops, give a research talk, network with other students/faculty/staff, and of course indulge in free food and refreshments!

All graduate students in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, and Environmental Science are encouraged to participate. Advanced undergraduates and graduate students from other departments who are conducting research in a closely-related or relevant field are also invited and encouraged to participate. Awards will be presented for best oral presentation and best poster presentation.

The Graduate Student Research Symposium is held in April each year for UNT students, faculty, staff, and members of the community. This free, two-day event includes student oral and poster presentations, networking events, seminars, and other fun activities. Awards are presented for best oral presentation and poster presentation. The symposium culminates in a keynote address delivered by a prominent visiting scientist.

As part of this year's events, the BGSA will be hosting two workshops in which students, staff, and faculty are welcome to attend. The first is a collaborative workshop on diversity and inclusivity in STEM, and the second is a hands-on workshop on creativity in science communication through art. They will also be presenting a short talk series called "Professors Go Off the Cuff," which is a low expectation/fun seminar we have planned to break away from all the science. In this "seminar" professors will be asked to present slides that the BGSA hs prepared for them without having any prior knowledge of the subject.

For a full schedule of events including research presentations, career panel, science communication seminar, undergraduate Q&A with graduate students, and keynote speaker seminar, visit https://untbgsa.weebly.com/schedule--program.html

UNT BGSA

The goal of the BGSA is to advocate the interests of Biology graduate students, provide a social networking tool for biology graduate students, promote a closer relationship among new and current graduate students, and to create an environment of support. BGSA represents our perspectives and concerns on several influential committees on campus and is committed to maintaining communication of issues and policies that affect the Biology graduate students.

BGSA helps build environment of support for graduate students in order to practice good science that will promote its students/members and the University of North Texas as a research-oriented institution.

The BGSA has representatives from each division of Biology that presents student concerns to the Department administration, and seeks to inform students about official goings-on, such as changes in the program, TA hiring conditions, etc.

Each month the BGSA hosts an informational meeting open to all graduate students in the Biological Sciences Department. Each meeting will include information about changes in the different graduate degree programs, such as the foreign language requirement, the research and creative portfolio alternatives, preparing for exam fields, and other topics of interest.

Each semester the BGSA hosts a social/mixer for new and returning students. All graduate students, faculty, and staff of Biological Sciences department are welcome to attend.
