Meet UNT Mathematics’ New Visiting Lecturer Lauren De La Rosa

Lauren De La Rosa is the newest visiting lecturer in the UNT Math Department, where she recently finished her MS degree in Mathematics. Prior to coming to UNT, Lauren earned her BS in Mechanical Engineering at Texas Tech University and BS in Mathematics from the University of Texas at Arlington. Lauren enjoys teaching the fundamentals of mathematics, and this semester she is instructing Beginning Algebra and Business Algebra classes.

"I really enjoy being able to help my students lay a solid foundation and set them up for success in all their other math courses," she said. "I also love to help build our logic and communication skills; both are skillsets that are important to have outside of the classroom. Lastly, I love to be able to teach the applications of the concepts we are learning."

She added that it is always a thrill to answer the age-old questions, "Why do we need to know this? When will we ever use this?"

Lauren made the decision to join UNT because she felt it was a place she could call home. She strives to cultivate that welcoming environment for all her students while encouraging new perspectives and points of connection.

"I was a first-generation college student who had to navigate the entire process myself. I know how daunting and scary the journey can be, especially at the very beginning," Lauren said. "I hope students see me as a new advocate and teacher who genuinely cares for them. I hope they know they can come to me for anything, even if it's not math related."

Lauren often finds herself thinking of new ways to increase student engagement and grow as an educator. She hopes that one day, she can use her skills to help train and support other incoming faculty members.

"I'm just really happy to be part of the UNT family. I can't wait to see what the future brings. I am so happy to be back on campus!" she said.

In her free time, Lauren loves to watch horror movies and anything supernatural. Her family's favorite pastime is to sit around a fire and tell scary stories.
