Meet UNT Mathematics’ New Lecturer Shafeena T. Khan

The College of Science is pleased to welcome Shafeena Khan to UNT Mathematics as one of their newest Lecturers. She will be teaching several beginning algebra courses as well as math classes for business and economics.

"I like to teach students the basics that will help them strengthen their skills in mathematics," she said. "I am also excited to teach courses that involve applications that are essential in today's world."

Ms. Khan's academic journey began in Bangalore University in India studying physics, mathematics, and computer science, earning her first B.S. with distinction. She was then accepted to UNT and moved to Texas to earn another mathematics degree, graduating Cum Laude in 2019. Among her honors, she also received an award from the Department of Disability at NCTC for excellence in tutoring. She hopes to bring what she has learned in her tutoring experiences to the classroom.

"Teaching mathematics to developing students is always challenging, so I incorporate a lot of student involvement to maximize learning opportunities," she said. "Students who are active and involved are better able to retain what they have learned and build onto it for future studies. I apply many strategies so that I can connect with my students better and learn which topics they are struggling with so I can help them accordingly."

After receiving her Master's in Mathematics Education from TWU just last year, Ms. Khan is excited to be returning to UNT as an educator.

"As an alumna of UNT, I have good memories attached to the campus in Denton. I had great professors who encouraged me to excel in my studies," she said. "I'd already taught two semesters as a math adjunct when the opportunity arose for this position, and I applied knowing that UNT would be the best place to start my teaching career."

Ms. Khan prides herself on being a multi-tasker. She enjoys cooking and trying new recipes from the various cultures she has encountered during her time in Denton. She is also an active member of the Denton Chapter of the Daughters of Abraham, an interfaith organization of women seeking to build bridges in our North Texas community, as well as the Islamic Society of Denton.

In the future, Ms. Khan is interested in conducting research in the field of Mathematics Education on her quest to find new ways to help students tackle math-related problems.

"I like to connect with students and ease their apprehension in learning the subject matter," she said. "I hope students who connect with me feel comfortable asking questions and sharing concerns they may have about learning mathematics."
