Meet Dr. Junhyeon Kwon, UNT Mathematics’ New Assistant Professor

The College of Science is pleased to welcome Dr. Junhyeon Kwon to the UNT Mathematics Department as one of our newest Assistant Professors. Dr. Kwon is a statistician dedicated to unraveling the inhomogeneous characteristics present in natural phenomena.

"My expertise lies in the adaptive modeling of local data structures," he said. "At present, I am deeply involved in the development of statistical methods that are driven by the inhomogeneous data produced by earthquake occurrences. My intent, however, extends beyond these specific instances. I am also committed to creating statistical approaches that are universally applicable, making them suitable for diverse types of data in a more general space, such as a manifold."

Dr. Kwon received his Bachelor's degree and PhD in Statistics from Seoul National University, where he was also awarded the Best Doctoral Thesis Award in recognition of his research accomplishments. Soon after, he accepted a position as post-doctoral fellow at the University of Houston.

When making his decision to come to UNT, Dr. Kwon said he was drawn to the research environment and felt there was great potential for making a meaningful impact in his field at a Tier One Research University such as UNT.

"I am also excited about the fast-growing economy of the Dallas-Fort Worth area and the many opportunities it presents for my students to find their role in the workforce," he said. "With its diverse and vibrant community, the DFW area offers a wealth of possibilities for professional development and growth, and I am eager to help my students take advantage of these opportunities."

In the Fall semester, Dr. Kwon will be teaching MATH 3680, an introductory statistics course. His class will cover important topics such as descriptive statistics, probability theory, random variables, and statistical inference.

"My goal for this course is to provide students with a solid foundation in statistics so that they can confidently tackle more advanced statistical topics if it is necessary in their future career," he said.

Dr. Kwon is also looking forward to exploring interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers from various fields here at the University of North Texas.

"I believe that my diverse yet interconnected interests in statistics, including multiscale methods, spatial statistics, time series analysis, and environmental statistics, will bring a fresh and unique perspective to interdisciplinary research at UNT, he said. "I am confident that my background and expertise will enable me to make meaningful contributions to the UNT community."

Besides his chosen field of academic study, Dr. Kwon is also interested in the learning new languages, including Japanese, Spanish, and Chinese. "Even though I'm not proficient in these languages, I thoroughly enjoy conversing with people in their native language and learning new vocabulary and expressions. I look forward to learning more languages in the future," he said.
