The UNT Chemistry Department recently announced the establishment of the Professor Martin Schwartz Scholarship in honor of his beloved mother, Betty Schwartz. Beginning in 2023, two chemistry scholarships will be awarded, one for graduate students and one for undergraduate or TAMS students.

In the meantime, two special one-time awards were given this year in honor of Dr. Schwartz's much-adored cats, Sapphire T. McGillicuddy and Spooky McSchwartz, Esquire. The cats were a standard feature in Dr. Schwartz's famous PowerPoint lectures.

Professor Martin Schwartz was an internationally recognized physical chemist and accomplished scholar, having published over 125 peer-reviewed research articles. Dr. Schwartz also directed or served on the advisory committees of over 150 Masters and Ph.D students, in addition to serving as a mentor for countless undergraduate and TAMS students throughout his 44 year tenure at UNT. Research and teaching were his passions.

Upon his passing, Dr. Schwartz's family began the process of fulfilling his wish to establish a scholarship in honor of his mother, Betty Schwartz. Her guidance and encouragement to Dr. Schwartz and his siblings produced a deep love of learning, a standard of excellence in every undertaking, and a passion for helping others develop similar characteristics.

The UNT College of Science and UNT Chemistry would like to thank Susan Schwartz for her generosity and for working closely with the department and UNT Advancement to ensure that Dr. Schwartz's wish to support our students came to pass.

The legacy Dr. Schwartz leaves behind is one of excellence in everything and encouragement to be curious about the world around us. We are so grateful for the continued generosity of the Schwartz family and look forward to celebrating his legacy each year through these scholarships.
