College of Science Spring/Summer 2020 Virtual Commencement Information

The University of North Texas community, family, and friends are invited to join us at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, to celebrate our 2020 spring and summer graduates from the College of Science in a livestream commencement ceremony. The virtual ceremony will include most of the traditional commencement elements like ceremonial degree conferral and individual graduate recognition, as well as remarks from UNT President Neal Smatresk and the playing of the UNT Alma Mater.

No registration is required. All are welcome to watch at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4b_zftvN6ZY&feature=youtu.be

All livestreamed ceremonies include American Sign Language Interpretation. Following the live event, high-quality text captions will be added to the video ASAP.

Can't watch your ceremony when it's live? No problem! Recordings of each ceremony will be saved online for later viewing.

Dean Su Gao will be addressing the newest graduates during the virtual festivities. Dr. Quintanilla, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies, helped with planning the virtual event. "We are very proud of our graduates and hope that they are able to join with their friends and family as we celebrate their accomplishments," he said.

During the ceremony, students with the highest honors in the College of Science will be recognized, including 64 students graduating cum laude (GPA between 3.5 and 3.69), another 64 students graduating magna cum laude (GPA between 3.7 and 3.89), and 41 students graduating summa cum laude (GPA between 3.9 and 4.0).

Our hope was that we would join together for in-person ceremonies in August to celebrate our graduates, but as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to unfold, it is clear that we cannot safely provide that kind of event. Even though commencement will not look like we originally planned, we are excited to celebrate the tremendous accomplishments of the Class of 2020. Earning a degree during such uncertain times is an emblem of UNT graduates' courage, adaptability and determination.

UNT's Tips for a Memorable Virtual Commencement Experience

For more information, visit: https://commencement.unt.edu/virtual

  • Schedule a virtual commencement watch party with family and friends or share the virtual commencement website link with family and friends, asking them to join you for the event. Just be sure to follow current mask/distancing guidelines from health officials to keep your family and friends safe.
  • Participate in time-honored commencement traditions such as standing upon degree conferral, tassel and/or ring turning, cap throwing, and the Eagle Talon hand sign during the Alma Mater.
  • Think of your front door entry, living room fireplace, apartment balcony or backyard patio as your own personal auditorium and walk across "the stage" and waive to your fans, smile and shout with joy as your name is called.
  • If you're a doctoral graduate, have a loved one place your hood. Take photos and videos of this special moment and share them with us: #UNTgrad!
  • Purchase regalia (optional) to wear during your virtual commencement celebration and for photo opportunities.
  • If you're an undergraduate, make sure to wear your mortar board tassel on the right side; when your degree is conferred by President Smatresk, move your tassel to the left.
  • Share your cap-and-gown selfie and other commencement experiences on social media. Tag us with #UNTgrad!
  • Download a PDF of the commencement program to provide commemorative memorabilia to your family, or to all of the guests who attend your celebration.
