Celebrating COS Class of ’21: Jakob Daniel Estrada

When Jakob Daniel Estrada was choosing a university, he knew he wanted to leave his hometown of San Antonio while still staying in Texas. He found UNT to be the perfect combination of affordable and comfortable. "I loved the atmosphere of UNT and felt like it was the school for me," he said. Four years later, Jakob is now proudly graduating from UNT this fall with a BS in biology. He is also completing the Teach North Texas program, which he feels was essential to his growth and goal-setting as a student here.

"Through this program, I was able to apply my knowledge and skills. The TNT personnel are some of the most caring and supportive people," said Jakob. "I thoroughly enjoyed my time in this program and I look forward to keeping in contact with everyone once I graduate."

While absorbed in his studies, Jakob still found time to work as a part-time desk clerk for more than two years. "I had such a positive experience working in this position and I met so many great people," he said. "During this time, I gain a handful of useful skills ranging from communication to organization and time management. I found myself applying these skills and my newfound knowledge in the classroom as part of my participation in the Teach North Texas program."

Jakob was also one of the first students to participate in the College of Science's new Students Helping Students campaign, which allows graduating seniors to receive a philanthropy graduation cord by making a donation of $20.21 to a fund that will help fellow students following in their footsteps.

"I believe that it is important to give back to your community. UNT provided numerous resources to me during my time as a student," he said. "It is because of these resources that I am where I am today. I enjoy helping others and I feel that by giving back via the Students Helping Students campaign, I can help others be successful."

Among the resources Jakob cited as incredibly helpful during his time at UNT was the caring staff of Teach North Texas, including his advisor Jennifer Johnston.

"Jen helped me through every step of my college experience. It was through the support and guidance of Jen and all of the Teach North Texas staff that I was able to find a career path that I am passionate about," Jakob said.

After graduation, Jakob will be returning home to San Antonio with the goal of securing a high school teaching position. He is eager to apply his knowledge and be a mentor and supporter to his students, and also hopes to return to school in the near future to pursue a Master's degree.

"One of the most important things that I learned while at UNT is how capable of success I am," said Jakob. "I started college not really knowing where I would end up. I am proud to say that UNT helped me create a path to success."
