The College of Science is proud to celebrate Betsi Good for receiving the 2026 Student
Well-Being Champion Award! This honor recognizes staff who foster a sense of belonging,
community, and wellness, creating supportive environments where students thrive.
“I was pleasantly surprised to have been considered for this award,” said Betsi, who
has been working in the chemistry department as their Scientific Instrument Technician
for two years. “I strive to acknowledge and support the hard-working students, staff,
and faculty around me and I am privileged to work with people who appreciate and reciprocate
my efforts.”Betsi said that students' well-being is of the highest importance to everyone in the
department. “We see how hard they work, particularly the graduate students, and we
all strive to make sure they are supported,” she said. “I am here to listen and assist
when students have issues. Our students aren't just a number used to measure the metrics
of success; they are unique, kind, and intelligent individuals that deserve support
in their path to success.”
Inspired by the kindness of a former coworker, Betsi started a small food pantry for
students, supported by colleagues who provide food staples, snacks, and hygiene products.
She also led efforts to resurrect an old Student Government Association project to
provide free menstruation products in the restrooms in the chemistry building.
“The student food pantry is located in the student services suite, Chemistry 207,”
said Betsi. “Any student is welcome to stop by and grab what they need, no questions
asked. It is a small pantry, stocked by just a few members of staff, so if anyone
is interested in helping us stock the pantry, we would gladly welcome any donations!”
Betsi earned her bachelor's degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from Texas Woman’s University
in 2017, building a strong foundation in biochemistry, food science, and human physiology.
Following graduation, she channeled her passion for fermentation science into a career
as a professional beer and kombucha brewer. Now she applies this unique combination
of nutritional science, fermentation expertise, and laboratory management to her role
at the University of North Texas.
In addition to repairing and maintaining scientific instruments, Betsi is also a Key
Authorizer, Building Representative, Safety Coordinator, and Inventory Coordinator
for the chemistry department. “I am a champion multitasker, and I love the variation
in my day-to-day activities,” she said. “This role is such a great fit for my personality.”
Betsi says she embraces every opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to the academic
and scientific community. “I enjoy having access to a plethora of learning opportunities
while working at UNT,” she said. “In addition to frequent job-related training, I
have also registered to take various UNT classes. I am currently taking Spanish, just
for fun!”
