Meet one of our new Career Coaches in the College of Science, Kate Summerhill! Kate is a first-generation University of North Texas alumna who completed her Bachelor of Arts in Biology with Honors in the Spring of 2022. As a COS Career Coach, Kate helps students transition from their role as an undergraduate college student to a working adult with a career. She thrives on encouraging and motivating our students to discover their true talents and strengths and to love and accept themselves for who they are.

"What I like to say is, we must take care of ourselves before we can make an impact on those around us," said Kate. "I am here as a resource for those first-generation young professionals who love science and have a deep need to explore what else is out there."

Before becoming a Career Coach, Kate was on the pre-med track at UNT and was dedicated to becoming a doctor or researcher in the field of science. She spent time shadowing doctors, serving in leadership roles in campus organizations, and getting involved in student activities. But 2020 had different plans, and when things slowed down during COVID, Kate gained the clarity she needed to make a different choice for her future. Upon returning from a year-long study abroad trip in 2021, she stumbled upon her dream job which would change her career path forever.

"I began working for the UNT Career Center as a Career Ambassador, and in this position my true talents revealed themselves to me. Soon after I applied for the position in the College of Science and never looked back," said Kate.

Kate has a strong desire to guide students in their professional and personal development. Her mission is to be a resource to young professionals of UNT, and she aims to help them see that they are extraordinary just as they are by helping them eliminate comparison and overcome other mental barriers.
