The Dean is pleased to recognize Luis Revilla Mata as a recipient of this month's COS Excellence in Mastering Challenges Continuously (E=mc²) Award! This award was established by Dean Quintanilla to recognize outstanding efforts among full-time staff members within the College of Science and its departments.

Luis, who is also an alumnus and a current graduate student in the College of Science, has been working as the Student and Program Coordinator in the UNT Biological Sciences Department for almost two years.

"I have a B.S. in Ecology from UNT that I used to work for a season at the National Ecological Observatory Network before coming back to UNT," he said. "Besides working full time, I am currently pursuing a graduate degree in environmental science."

"Luis is the graduate admission coordinator for our department, he handles the office's email, and he hires and supervises our work-study students during fall & spring semesters. He does a lot!" said Dr. Jessica Moore, senior lecturer and advisor for UNT Biological Sciences. "He is always calm and helpful when interacting with students. He provides valuable support to our office and our department, even when students express frustration about their situations."

Though his day-to-day tasks vary, they usually involve talking to students and helping them with their enrollment and scholarship hurdles. Luis says his favorite thing about the job is problem-solving.

When he isn't busy helping College of Science students succeed, Luis enjoys wildlife photography, especially birds, and will sometimes plan trips around the migratory patterns of specific species that he wants to photograph. Some of his photos can be viewed on display in the CASE display on the first floor of Hickory Hall.

Kathleen Carter of the College of Science Advising Office was also a recipient of September's E=mc² Award. Dean Quintanilla plans to continue giving this award to two outstanding COS staff members every month for the foreseeable future.
