Dr. Warren Burggren Receives 2023 Research Leadership Award

The UNT College of Science is pleased to announce that Dr. Warren Burggren of the Biological Sciences department was selected to receive the 2023 Research Leadership Award from the UNT Foundation and Faculty Success. This award is given to a full-time University faculty member whose research excellence and leadership at UNT has made substantial contribution to their respective discipline and achieved national and/or international recognition.

"You know, most applicants for an honor external to UNT can put together something fairly decent when creating a portfolio for evaluation," said Dr. Burggren. "But when you've been here at UNT for twenty-five years, as I'm approaching, all the internal UNT evaluators have had a chance over the years to discover all of my academic 'warts and wrinkles'. To have gotten over that additional hurdle is truly amazing to me. I'm very honored and actually humbled - now I have to work even harder!"

Dr. Warren Burggren teaches courses on topics in physiology, adaptation and environmental biology, and mentors graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. His research and teaching interests are in developmental physiology, epigenetics and epigenetic inheritance.

Dr. Burggren is the principal investigator of the Developmental Physiology Laboratory, which is part of UNT's Developmental Integrative Biology Research Group. The group's research program, currently funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes for Health, AstraZeneca (Sweden) and the US Navy, focuses on the developmental phenotypic plasticity exhibited by physiology and morphology in animals. The Developmental Physiology Laboratory employs a wide variety of tractable animal models to understand how animals develop as they respond to both natural and anthropogenic environmental challenges.

Dr. Burggren will be honored at UNT's Salute to Faculty Excellence event taking place on April 23, 2023. This event is hosted each spring by Faculty Success and the UNT Foundation. It is just one of the many ways UNT honors the dedicated faculty members whose innovative research, pedagogy, and service continue our university's tradition of prestige.
