Dr. Amy Petros, a senior lecturer of UNT Chemistry, will receive a $10,000 grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board as part of a state-wide initiative to support faculty working to reduce higher education costs for students. The grant will allow Dr. Petros to develop a new version of the department's general chemistry course (CHEM 1410/1420) for science majors using only free, open-source resources, which will include the e-textbook, educational videos, and Canvas. The grant will also allow her to attend a workshop in Buffalo, NY next summer where she will learn how to write science case studies. She will be attending additional conferences later in the year to guide fellow educators in using free educational resources to help relieve the financial burden of students.

Dr. Petros completed her undergraduate studies at UNT in Chemistry and achieved her PhD at Columbia University. She returned Denton and began teaching chemistry at UNT in 2010. She is also an active community outreach organizer, running the Houston Elementry science fair, and volunteering at other educational initiatives in the area.
