The College of Science is pleased to announce Dr. Aaron Roberts has been named the new Director of the Advanced Environmental Research Institute (AERI), effective May 15. Dr. Roberts has served as a professor and researcher in the Department of Biological Sciences since he began teaching at the University of North Texas in 2006, and has been working alongside Dr. Atkinson as the deputy director of AERI for the past three years.

"I am very excited for this opportunity," said Dr. Roberts. "Most of all, I'm look forward to working with AERI's unique collection of scientists to address environmental issues that require interdisclipinary solutions. Collaboration is key."

A recognized researcher in environmental toxicology, Dr. Roberts focuses largely on the effects of environmental stressors on aquatic organisms, specifically on how changes at the molecular and biochemical level can impact populations, communities and ecosystems.

Dr. Sam Atkinson, Regents Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, stepped down at the close of the 2019 Spring semester after serving as inaugural director of AERI since 2016. Dr. Atkinson successfully assembled a group of dedicated and brilliant scientists that advanced our fundamental knowledge in understanding the complexities of the environment, growing AERI into the thriving research institute it is today.

Under the leadership of Dr. Roberts, UNT looks forward to elevating AERI even further in research excellence and reputation at national and international levels with sustained growth for years to come. The College of Science is excited to see what new challenges and solutions the institute will conquer in regards to water quality, natural resource management, and other crucial environmental issues.
