COVID FAQ with College of Science Career Coach

The current social distancing protocol implimented to keep our community safe has changed how a lot of us do things at the University of North Texas, but the College of Science continues to offer a variety of career services to our students in today's virtual environment. Resume reviews, career path exploration, networking and job search pointers, cover letter reviews, and more are available by emailing our College of Science Career Coach, Susan Bradley, at susan.bradley@unt.edu to set up a Zoom coaching session. Students can also phone Susan at (940) 565-4575.

The following are Frequently Asked Questions our students are asking during this time:

Q: Are jobs and internships still available in the marketplace, or have they all been put on hold?

A: There are plenty of jobs and internships still available, particularly in the sciences and quantitative fields. Many employers are having to staff up to meet increased demand for services related to COVID-19. For others, job growth remains on track, although job descriptions and requirements are in many cases being adjusted to accommodate virtual workplace requirements. Susan can help you explore all the features of Handshake and other job boards to identify job openings that are a good fit for your skills and interests.

Q: Can I get a quick resume or cover letter review through email, without scheduling an appointment?

A: Absolutely! Just email Susan your documents at susan.bradley@unt.edu, and she will be happy to review and provide input via email. If there is a specific job posting you are applying for, please include a link to the posting as well. The best resumes and cover letters are adapted to highlight your most relevant skills and experience for the job requirements you are applying for.

Q: How can I continue to network with potential employers and other influential persons during stay-at-home orders?

A: There are a number of ways you can continue to build and nurture relationships with potential employers, professional references and schoolmates. Susan can show you how to use the UNT community function on LinkedIn for powerful data searches and outreach. Additionally, there are lots of great industry organizations you can connect with that have virtual meetings and job boards which can be of great help during your exploration of various career paths, jobs and internships.

Q: Is it worth continuing my education at this time, or should I take a break and see what evolutions occur in the job market?

A: It is more important than ever to continue your college education. The impact of the virus will likely be felt most dramatically in lower-skilled positions that are most vulnerable to replacement by automation. Use this unprecedented time in world history to increase your knowledge and marketability in order to have a secure and meaningful career and important impact in the job market of today and tomorrow.
