Meet Lizette Ozog, senior academic advisor in the College of Science's Office of Health Professions! Lizette completed her own B.S. in Biology as well as her Master's at Loyola University in Chicago. Though she was a pre-med student herself, Lizette realized she had a passion for connecting with students and sought out opportunities to work with pre-health students, eventually completing her Master's in Higher Education so she could pursue a career in advising. Q: What is your favorite part about your job?

I love helping students figure out complicated situations and overcome challenges. Sometimes that has to do with academics, extracurricular experiences, or personal stuff. Helping someone realize that those challenges and unique parts of the journey are such assets in their development as a future healthcare professional is a really incredible thing. I always tell my students, "You're driving the car, just tell me where we're going and I'll help you get there!"

Q: What is the last thing you read for fun?

The Devil in the White City…I feel like I have to explain that a bit because it sounds a little morbid. I was born and raised in Chicago so reading a murder mystery about the city was really fascinating. When I lived there I took a tour centered around that story and learned about the history and all the weird stuff going on during the1893 World's Columbian Exposition- it was super interesting. I love reading and watching murder mysteries…that and learning about food and culture, so as you can see a pretty wide and cool/strange array of interests!

Q: What is your favorite thing about UNT?

The people! I adore my team in the Office of Health Professions and have met so many fantastic people in every part of the university during the time that I've worked here.

Q: What do you do in your spare time?

I'm a crazy dog mama, so I spend lots of time with my two pups and take them anywhere and everywhere dogs are allowed. My husband and I have an incredible group of family and friends and we love spending time with them too, so aside from dog-mommying, an ideal weekend would be cooking a huge meal and having those family and friends over to enjoy it!

Q: What is the best advice you can give to our COS students?

Get to know your advisors (academic advisors and health professions advisors) and meet often with them. I am so happy when students make appointments to check-in, not just to deal with a specific problem they're facing (which is necessary too!). I love catching up with them, hearing about all of the cool things they're doing…somewhere in that conversation I might try to work in some advice, but having regular check-in points is so important; I am your advocate so let me help you!
