Meet your COS Senior Academic Counselor, Kathleen Carter! She has an extensive background working with new college students and first-generation students and was even nominated for instructor of the year at her previous job. Check out Kathleen's spotlight interview here and be sure to contact our Advising Office if you need to schedule time with one of our excellent academic advisors!

How did you get into academic advising?

I got into Higher Education/Advising on a whim. I actually went to law school after undergraduate school, and when I decided that was no longer the path meant for me, I switched to Education. Academic Advising has been my career since then and I'd like to think that my own education has made it a perfect fit for doing so professionally!

What is your favorite part about your job?

It may sound odd, but my favorite part of my job is working with students on academic alert. Not because I enjoy the situation they are in, but because the smiles and achievement that comes out the other side after having tough discussions can lead to some pretty amazing places.

What is the last thing you read for fun?

Does Buzzfeed count?

What is your favorite thing about UNT?

The Mean Green spirit and family atmosphere. I haven't met someone yet who isn't willing to help or hasn't been welcoming.

What do you do in your spare time?

I love to spend time with my husband and children, including my two fur kids. I find my happy place when I am near the lake or ocean.

What is the best advice you can give to our COS students?

Don't give up. No matter what obstacle you need to overcome, keep pounding. Let no obstacle stand between you and your education.
