Interim Dean Ed Dzialowski is pleased to recognize Jack Bolerjack and Ryan O’Shaughnessy as the recipients of this summer’s Excellence in Mastering Challenges Continuously (E=mc²) Award! This award recognizes outstanding efforts among full-time staff members within the UNT College of Science. 

Jack began working at UNT in the Housing Department in May of 2015 and has spent the last three years working as a Scientific Instrument Technician for UNT’s biology labs.  

“We work with researchers to assist with various projects,” said Jack. “The tasks can range from climbing under aquatic systems to correct a leak to diagnosing issues with the electronics controls of greenhouses to helping labs coordinate with other departments or services directly impacting their research projects.” 

Ryan has been the Biological Sciences department’s Scientific Instrument Technician Supervisor for the last eight years, but his own time at UNT extends back eighteen years to when he was a student himself. 

“I love the people, working with my hands, and the unique problems I get to help solve, whether it’s working on mass specs and microscopes or changing lightbulbs and rebuilding autoclaves,” said Ryan. “We also deal with the floods, fires, and power outages whenever they arise. Every day is different, but it always starts with a cup of coffee!” 

“Our technicians always go above and beyond to find solutions for the department’s pressing equipment and infrastructure problems,” said an anonymous colleague. “Despite their overwhelming workload, they see things through to completion with thoroughness, and I don’t know what the department would do without them.” 

“I’m humbled and gracious to receive this award,” said Ryan. In his award interview, he revealed that he has an identical twin brother and that he “hacks up a lot of golf courses” in his free time. 

Jack said he is also grateful for the recognition. He grew up on a ranch and outside of work, he takes care of his two dogs, practices orienteering, and rides motorcycles.
