Meet Sariaya Oommen, one of our outstanding UNT biology majors participating in the 3+4 Pathway Program, an accelerated medical partnership between the University of North Texas and the UNTHSC Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM). Knowing that she wanted to pursue a career in medicine from a young age, the program was one of the deciding factors in Sariaya's choice to enroll at UNT.

Sariaya Oommen“While researching options all over the country, I came across the 3+4 Pathway Program. Since UNT was already one of my top choices, I knew this was where I wanted to continue my education,” she said. “My older sister also attended UNT, so I saw firsthand how dedicated the university is to helping students transition into their careers.”

Currently in her third year of the program, Sariaya has just been accepted into TCOM at the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC). Students involved in the Pathway Program are not guaranteed admission to medical school, but they may start medical school a year early in the likelihood that they are.

“It eases the financial burden of becoming a physician, and beyond that, the friendships, mentorships, and experiences within this program truly help during the challenging journey to medical school,” said Sariaya. “Many people have supported me throughout this journey, but my advisor Todd Lang was especially instrumental to my success. His guidance was crucial in preparing me for the medical school application process and interviews. I genuinely cannot imagine this journey without such an incredible mentor.”

As part of her pre-med biology degree, Sariaya participated in several undergraduate research opportunities, from investigations in cancer therapy in the chemistry lab of Dr. Mohammed Omary in 2023 to experiencing clinical research in her program internship at TCOM last summer.

“Being part of this program has pushed me to hold myself to a higher standard and strive to be the best version of myself. With the demanding schedule set forth by this program, along with extracurriculars, volunteering, shadowing and research, I have had to develop strong time-management skills while maintaining a high GPA,” she explained. “The skills I’ve gained throughout this program have prepared me for the challenges I will face in medical school.”

On top of being an accomplished student, Sariaya also volunteers with several health service nonprofits and is the current president of the Rotaract Club at the University of North Texas an international public health advocacy organization that serves its local community and creates social awareness through volunteering, donating blood, and partnering with organizations to promote sustainable projects.

“Through volunteering, I’ve developed a passion for increasing access to healthcare for those who lack it. While I’m still exploring my path within medicine, I hope my future career aligns with my interests and allows me to make a meaningful impact on my community and healthcare,” said Sariaya. “I am excited to begin this new chapter of my life, one that I have dreamed of and worked tirelessly towards for many years."
