The UNT College of Science is pleased to welcome Visiting Assistant Professor Dr. Shilpi Mandal to the UNT Mathematics department. She recently completed her Ph.D. at Emory University, where she was also awarded the 2025 Graduate Research Award for demonstrating outstanding research activities in mathematics.

Dr. Shilpi MandalDr. Mandal's research focus is in pure mathematics, and she looks forward to working on rigid analytical geometry with her postdoc mentor Dr. Jackson Morrow while teaching Linear Algebra and Vector Geometry this semester.

“I am excited to teach students that mathematics is lovely and nothing to be feared of, and maybe even encourage them to be math majors in the future!” said Dr. Mandal, who earned BS and MS dual degrees from the University of Hyderabad in India. “I want my students to know that it is okay to make mistakes, but it is important to learn from them. The field of mathematics is way more forgiving than it feels.”

While completing her Ph.D. at Emory, Dr. Mandal was an instructor for Emory Math Circle, served on the steering committee of Emory Math Directed Reading Program, and was a founding member at the AWM Student Chapter at Emory. She said she hopes to continue similar service efforts during her time here at the University of North Texas.

Dr. Mandal loves reading math blogs and puzzles, has a red belt in taekwondo, and enjoys foraging for wild mushrooms. Check out her website for more at: https://shilpimandal.com/
