The UNT College of Science is pleased to welcome Michelle Thompson the UNT Mathematics department this semester as one of their newest Lecturers. Mrs. Thompson will be teaching Pre-Beginning Algebra, Math for Business and Economics, and Elementary Probability and Statistics. She is looking forward to teaching her students how math connects to the real world and help them build a strong foundation that will support their success in higher level courses.

Michelle Thompson“Whether it is the logic of pre-algebra, or the everyday relevance of probability and statistics, or the practical applications in business and economics, I want to show students that math is not just about numbers, but it is also a powerful way to understand and solve problems in life,” said Mrs. Thompson, who studied at the University of the West Indies and Georgia State University. “My goal is to spark curiosity and confidence, and to help students develop a lasting appreciation for math, just like I have.”

Mrs. Thompson comes to UNT with several years’ experience teaching both secondary and tertiary level students. “I have taught high school students who were smart enough to take AP courses in the 10th grade, and I have also taught the students who struggle with math and still needed to pass algebra to graduate,” she said. “I think my patience and passion to help my students become more confident with the course will be helpful as I strive to create a classroom environment that is inclusive and engaging, and where every student feels seen, supported, and empowered to succeed.”

She said she often hears students say that they “struggle with math,” but she wants them to know that this does not mean that they are bad at math, just that they are learning and growing.

“Math is like a puzzle that may seem difficult at first, but with patience and persistence, the pieces start to fit,” she said. “I encourage my students to believe in themselves and not be afraid to make mistakes – that is a part of the journey. I really want them to know that they are capable of more than they think.”

Born and raised in Jamaica, Mrs. Thompson is passionate about cooking, reading, dancing, and watching Halmark movies. She recently moved to the area with her family and UNT is proud to welcome them to North Texas!
