The Dean is pleased to recognize Dr. Timothy Stephens as the recipient of this month’s Excellence in Mastering Challenges Continuously (E=mc²) Award! This award was established by Dean Quintanilla in 2023 to recognize outstanding efforts among full-time staff members within the College of Science and its departments.

Dr. Stephens has been working full-time at the University of North Texas since 2017 and is currently a Senior Instructional LabTimothy Stephens Supervisor in the Chemistry department. His first experience at UNT was as grad student in 2009, earning his Ph.D. here and teaching for several years at TWU afterwards.

In UNT Chemistry, Dr. Stephens works closely with other lab supervisors to ensure the success and safety of chemistry labs and research projects.

“Most of my job is to be on-hand in case emergencies come up or if there are questions that need to be answered during classes,” he said. “The best part of my job is the people; I work with a lot of great people in this department.”

“Dr. Stephens is a positive, amazingly supportive teacher and supervisor,” said colleague Betsi Good, a Scientific Instrument Technician in the department. “He revamped the instructional chemistry labs and has a unique ability to support students by providing relevant, easy to understand information that is vital to their success. Dr. Stephens is supportive of the many people who work with him and for him. He is truly a joy to work with.”

In his free time, Dr. Stephens is an avid knitter and dedicates his time to fundraising for charity. “Some of my favorite projects are to make little gnomes to place in my office,” he said. “I have won multiple first place ribbons at the State Fair for my knitting. I also once raised over $1,500 for a charity 5K walk that I did in high heels. It was a fun experience!”
