Millican lectures are made possible through the generosity of Mr. Olin Moore Millican (1904-1999), who established the Roy McLeod Millican Memorial Fund in honor of his brother.
The talks typically take place on Mondays from 4:30 to 5:30 pm in GAB 461. The talks are intended for a general mathematical audience, and everyone is encouraged to attend (including undergraduates). Refreshments are served 30 minutes before the talk in the same room as the talk.

September 14, 2026: Will Boney (Texas State University)Title: Nonstandard ultraproducts in torsion modules, perfect groups, locally finite groups, and more!Abstract: Taking ultraproducts is an essential tool in model theory, most notably giving a proof of the powerful Compactness Theorem for first-order logic: if a every finite subset of a collection of axioms has a model, then there is a model of the entire (infinite!) set of axioms. However, (working in ZFC) the standard ultraproduct construction is not very useful outside of first-order logic. On the other hand, many interesting algebraic properties are not first-order: torsion modules, locally finite groups, rank 1 valued fields, and more. |
