The Dr. Linda Truitt Creagh Chemistry Travel Award
The Dr. Linda Truitt Creagh Chemistry Travel Award supports travel by graduate or
undergraduate students to present research at an American Chemical Society National
Meeting.
The Professor Martin Schwartz Chemistry Travel Award
The Professor Martin Schwartz Chemistry Travel Award supports travel by graduate or
undergraduate students to national and international chemistry meetings, conferences,
and workshops. This includes, but is not limited to, ACS National Meetings.
Application Deadlines
Preference for the awards will go to students who have not traveled to a national
or international conference before and/or do not have available funding sources (e.g.,
from their advisors’ grants or startup funds) to support their travel.

Application Process
To be considered for a travel award, please apply via email to chemgrad@unt.edu by the specified deadline. Please include the name of the award you are applying
for in the title of your email.
1. Prior to applying, submit a Travel Request to morgan.smith@unt.edu.
2. Please submit a single PDF application file containing all of the following:
- Student’s name, research advisor, and year of study (e.g., 3rd year PhD student)
- Name of conference or meeting to be attended and travel dates.
- Anticipated budget for all allowed travel costs (registration, airfare, lodging, airport
parking, ground transportation, and meals at the federal per diem rate) **Applicants
are responsible for keeping costs to a reasonable level and following department travel
guidelines (see below).
- Other funding sources available or anticipated to cover your travel. If you have
applied for and/or received COS or TGS travel awards, or if you intend to apply for
one of these, list these along with the status of the awards.
- Brief justification (1/4 page) for why the travel funds are needed and the impact
the award would have on your education and professional development.
- Current CV or resume, showing all publications and conference presentations to date
- A copy of the submitted abstract or applciation for the meeting
- A copy of the acceptance notice for the meeting
Please note that students who already received a departmental travel award in this
academic year may not receive a second one.

Departmental Travel Guidelines:
-Always discuss your travel plans with your advisor at least 6 months before the meeting
to ensure they can cover any costs not covered by travel awards
-In general, only costs included in your Travel Request can be reimbursed, so please
plan carefully
-Follow federal per diem rates for meals and hotels
-Book flights well in advance, ideally 60 days or more, to avoid overpriced tickets
-Share rooms whenever possible, and always if staying at an ACS conference hotel
-Register for ACS meetings by the early bird/advance rate deadline. Costs will be
reimbursed at this rate.
-Students are strongly encouraged to become ACS student members, as this significantly
reduces registration fees for ACS meetings
-However, note that membership dues for ACS and other organizations cannot be covered
by travel awards
-Alcoholic beverage purchases cannot be reimbursed
-Purchases for non-business companions or other students cannot be covered or reimbursed
-Personal expenses cannot be reimbursed
