Teach North Texas Scholarships
If you are a Teach North Texas student, majoring in Math or Science, and maintaining
a GPA of 2.5 or higher, you are eligible to apply for scholarships through Teach North
Texas. The yearly deadline to apply is in February. These scholarships are available
thanks to the following endowments:
- The Lupe Murchison Foundation Scholarship
- The Thomas Wayne Taylor Scholarship
- The Price & Elaine B. Truitt Endowment Fund
- The Benjamin Dwain Vance Scholarship for Science Teachers
- Lillian A. & Joseph A. Ethridge Teach North Texas Scholarship
- The Scarbrough Scholarship for Mathematics & Science
- Greater Texas Foundation (GTF) Math & Science Teacher Scholarship
- The Dr. Ed Thornton Memorial Scholarship

Various scholarships available to students pursuing a STEM degree
Up to $3,000 per year for future high school physics teachers
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
Up to $4,000 - must be completing Sophomore year of college and a member of NCTM
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
Up to $12,000 - applicant must in Sophomore standing and a member of NCTM
National Institute for Labor Relations Research
$1,000 to student majoring in Education
Varying awards up to $5,000 for Hispanic students - requirements vary
Society of Physics Students
Varies according to individual scholarship - must be a member of SPS
$1,000 award
$2,000 award - 5 available for low-income women with children
Advancing Indigenous Science and Engineering Society
Varies according to individual scholarship - must be an AISES member
American Chemical Society
Up to $10,000 - renewable for freshman-junior level chemistry students
Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association
$2,500 - $5,000 awards available for students pursuing an education degree with
the purpose of teaching STEM subjects at U.S. middle or secondary school
Alpha Kappa Alpha
Amounts, requirements, and deadlines vary according to individual scholarship
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority National Education Foundation
$500 to $1,000 - Available to graduate or undergraduate level students enrolled
in a degree program in either elementary or secondary education. Award for full-time
study for one academic year
Hard-copy applications - including essays, transcripts, and recommendations - are
due to UNT's Office for Nationally Competitive Scholarships (Sage 228) by October
6th

TEACHER LOAN FORGIVENESS (TLF) PROGRAM
Program Description:
- Loans disbursed through the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program and the Federal Direct Loan (DL) Program may qualify.
- You must be a new Federal student loan borrower as of 10/1/98 OR have had no outstanding balance on 10/1/98 on FFEL/DL loan obtained before that date.
- You must have received the loan to be forgiven before completing the final year of qualifying service.
Service Requirement:
- Engage in teaching full-time in a public or private non-profit elementary or secondary school that has been designated as a "low income" school by the U.S. Department of Education for five consecutive academic years.
- At least one of the years of teaching must be after the 1997-98 academic year.
You may be eligible for up to $17,500 in loan forgiveness if you meet the following service requirements in addition to those above:
- Engage in teaching full-time in math or science, OR
- Engage in teaching full time in a special education
How to apply:
- Once you have completed the five year teaching agreement, you can apply for loan cancellation by completing an application provided by your lender.
- Once you have completed the application, you must have it certified by the Chief Administration Officer at the school in which you are teaching.
- Submit the completed application with certification to your lender. Your lender will determine your eligibility for loan forgiveness.
Perkins Loan Forgiveness
Amount: Up to 100% of your loan amount
Program Description:
- If you are eligible for cancellation of your Perkins Loan, up to 100% of your loan may be cancelled. For eligibility requirements and more information, click here to go to the Federal Student Aid website.
