<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><item href="/news/2026-student-spotlight-noore-mawla.html" dsn="news"><item_date>03/11/2026 03:21:10 PM</item_date><updated_item_date/><category_header/><title>Student Spotlight: Noore Mawla</title><description/><author/><image><img src="/images/news/2026-news/noorecover.png" alt="Noore Mawla"/></image><thumbnail_image><img src="" alt=""/></thumbnail_image><tags><tag>Biological Sciences</tag><tag>Pre-Med</tag><tag>Research</tag></tags><type>article</type><categories/><relationships/><main-content>Noore Mawla is a UNT biology major and pre-med student in the 3+4 Pathways Program, an accelerated program where students can complete both their bachelor's and medical degree in seven years. Though participation in the program does not guarentee acceptance into medical school, Noore is in her final semester at UNT and was recently accepted to the UNT Health Science Center’s Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNTHSC TCOM). 
“3+4 has opened many doors for me and has helped me be intentional with what I do in my academics and extracurriculars,” said Noore, who applied to UNT specifically to participate in the program. “I was able to commit early to medicine and focus my time on experiences that will help me grow into a well-prepared physician. I have connected with great advisors and faculty mentors who introduced me to research opportunities and gave me early exposure to TCOM and the learning environment there.” 
Part of her learning experience at UNT has involved gaining research experience in the SEA-PHAGES lab of Dr. Lee Hughes. The research Noore conducted in the lab focuses on discovering and characterizing bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria) and combined hands-on laboratory work with computational analysis. 
“I pursued this research because of my interest in infectious diseases, specifically the growing issue of antibiotic resistance and exploring alternative approaches,” said Noore. “In many parts of the world, particularly in underserved communities, access to effective antibiotics is already limited and resistant infections can become very difficult to treat. I hope this work continues to expand our understanding of bacteriophages and support the development of new solutions.” 
Noore said that her Health Professions advisor, Todd Lang, has been pivotal in her academic journey at UNT. “He has guided me through each semester and always encourages me to stay focused on both my academics and involvement outside the classroom,” she said. “His experience with the application process and understanding of the program were invaluable, and I am very grateful to have had his mentorship these past three years.” 
Outside of the lab, Noore has been involved in the UNT Muslim Student Association and the Medically Dedicated Students Organization, which helped her connect with other students who share similar values in faith and goals in healthcare. She also volunteers with local nonprofit organizations such as Ma’ruf Dallas and Noorishment USA, where she tutors refugee students who are interested in strengthening their education and exploring opportunities in medicine. 
“Working with refugee students is something I care deeply about,” said Noore. “Being able to support them, teach them, and watch their confidence grow is incredibly rewarding, and it’s one of the ways I try to give back to my community while continuing to pursue my academic goals.” 
Her advice for other students interested in pursuing a career in health professions through the 3+4 Pathway Program is to take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself. 
"The experience pushes you to stay motivated, work hard, and make the most of the resources around you,” she said. “Even if things don’t go exactly as planned, the program helps you build a strong foundation in healthcare, gain meaningful experiences, and form the mindset you will need to succeed in medical school or any other graduate path you choose.”</main-content></item>
