DIY Advising

The Process:

Advising is a multi-step process that makes sure you are in the right courses to get you through to graduation. As Advisors, we follow the same general steps you will see below, with a bit more context provided by our professional training and years of experience. While you're always welcome to schedule with us, we know many people want to feel that college independence. The guide below is meant for either group. You can do this before joining one of the Advisors in a scheduled meeting or drop-in time, or to put yourself on the right track to enrollment (if you do not have an advising hold).

Preparing for Academic Advising & DIY Enrollment

  1. Review your account for holds at my.unt.edu
    1. You're looking for things like Student Financial Obligation, Advising Required, Transcript Hold, and others. Click on those titles if they appear to learn more.
  2. Run a degree audit at mydegreeaudit.unt.edu to find out what you have already accomplished, and what you have left to graduate.
    1. Go to mydegreeaudit.unt.edu
    2. Log in with your EUID and Password.
    3. On the "Audits" tab, click "Run Declared Program" at the bottom of the page. (You can also choose "Select a Different Program" if you are considering changing your major).
    4. A list of audits run will appear. Select "View Audit" next to the audit you just created (check the created column to ensure you're selecting the most current).
    5. Any section listed with a red X has courses yet to be taken/passed for graduation. Look here for possible courses to take next!
  3. Know how many hours you want to take in the coming fall/spring semester, summer, or winter session.
    1. Only you know what a good balanced course load will be to plan around possible work, personal life, and other commitments.
    2. Check with Student Financial Aid and Scholarships to see if you need to be full time, part time, or have other requirements.
  4. Plan out courses you want to take.
    1. Your degree audit will help you find out what's left to get you through to graduation.
    2. Look up class descriptions on catalog.unt.edu. Be sure to look at the prerequisites for each class!
    3. Search through my.unt.edu for classes and plan a schedule using our Fillable Advising Record.
    4. Students our degree maps and checklists to view proper sequencing of courses.
    5. Bring that advising record to the advising session.
  5. Register for classes!
    1. Use my.unt.edu to search for and add the classes that you are going to take.
