Experimental Physics Lab Honors UNT Alumnus

As a fitting tribute to his brother-in-law, Dr. Louis Pol (UNT alumnus '71, '73 M.A.) and his wife Janet dedicated the Pete Latham Experimental Lab through a naming gift to the College of Science. This specialized lab space for students studying in the Physics Department gives recognition to the life and achievements of Dr. Pete Latham Jr., who earned his Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics, a Master of Science in Physics, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Physics at the University of North Texas. Dr. Latham enjoyed a career as a renowned research scientist, working on projects like the Strategic Defense Initiative and applying laser research to medical applications.

Dr. Latham's legacy of love for science is now joined with UNT's legacy of producing the best and the brightest scholars. "This larger, better-equipped space gives us the flexibility to offer students a greater variety of labs," said Dr. Duncan Weathers, Associate Professor of Physics.

"Pete and I both have a family legacy at the University of North Texas," Dr. Pol said of his brother-in-law. "He was grateful for his degree and was deeply influences by his professors, both during his studies and after graduation. Janet and I felt it was the best way for UNT to honor him."

It's important to us to support our students while honoring the research and work of those who have paved the wave towards scientific success. If you would like to make an impact on the lives of students, or leave a legacy in loving memory of a family member, whether it be an endowed scholarship, expendable gift, or namesake like the Pete Latham Experimental Lab, please call Meghan Dours to discuss how we can work together.
